OUR HISTORY
Husaini Association of Manitoba is a charitable, non-profit organization that was established in 1983. The primary objective of the organization is to provide religious, spiritual, cultural and social services to a community of Muslims of the Shia Ithna-Asheri faith who are living in and around Winnipeg, Manitoba. The organization owns a multi-purpose Islamic Community Centre just outside the city of Winnipeg that serves as the community’s place of worship as well as the venue for various community programs aimed at serving the needs and interests of members of all ages.
The community members that make up the congregation are predominantly of families of South Asian origin, though the community is growing rapidly, with an increasing number of members from diverse backgrounds. The majority of programs are held in English, with some recitations in Arabic as well as Urdu.
Activities and events organized by Husaini Association throughout the year primarily include prayers, educational lectures, as well as celebrations and commemorations of significant Islamic occasions. Additionally, the organization hosts guest speakers for special occasions throughout the year, as well as interfaith (and intra-faith) events. Husaini Association also hosts an annual family Eid picnic, sports activities, youth engagement sessions, a youth mentorship program for girls, volunteering and charity initiatives, and much more.
In 2016, a key milestone was achieved by the organization with the purchase of an Islamic centre to call home. An official inauguration event to celebrate the new centre was held in August 2016. This was a historical event for the community and certainly one that will be remembered fondly for many years to come. For years prior to acquiring the centre, the organization held events and activities at various rented facilities and occasionally in the homes of its members. With the purchase of the centre, Husaini Association is now able to organize and host many more events and activities for the growing community.
To meet the objectives of the organization, particularly in organizing events and activities, the Husaini Association Executive Committee relies on the extensive support of volunteers from the community as well as the continued engagement of the individuals and families that attend and participate.
